Yūsuf al-Qaraḍāwī
Yūsuf al-Qaraḍāwī (1926–2022) was one of the most influential Muslim jurists, theologians, and authors of the modern period. Educated at al-Azhar University, he produced an extensive body of scholarship spanning Islamic jurisprudence, ḥadīth, Qurʾānic studies, ethics, and contemporary Islamic thought. Although primarily renowned as a jurist, al-Qaraḍāwī regarded the life of the Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ as the essential foundation for understanding Islam and applying its teachings in every age. Throughout his writings, he emphasized that the sīrah constitutes an indispensable source for comprehending the Qurʾān, the sunnah, and the objectives of Islamic law.
al-Qaraḍāwī's principal contribution to sīrah scholarship is his methodological approach to studying the Prophet’s ﷺ life. He argued that the sīrah should neither be treated merely as a chronological historical narrative nor reduced to devotional storytelling. Rather, it should be examined critically through the authenticated sources while extracting its educational, spiritual, legal, and civilizational lessons. His approach combines fidelity to the classical sīrah tradition with careful attention to the objectives (maqāṣid) of the Prophet’s ﷺ mission, making the sīrah directly relevant to contemporary Muslim life.
His most important work in this field is Kayfa Nataʿāmal maʿa al-Sīrah al-Nabawiyyah: Maʿālim wa Ḍawābiṭ, in which he establishes principles for the proper study and interpretation of the Prophet’s ﷺ biography. The work discusses the authenticity of historical reports, the relationship between the Qurʾān and the sīrah, the role of the sunnah in interpreting historical events, and the importance of deriving practical guidance from the Prophet’s ﷺ example. Al-Qaraḍāwī criticizes both uncritical acceptance of weak narrations and excessive historical skepticism, advocating instead a balanced methodology rooted in the earliest Islamic sources and the established sciences of ḥadīth.
Yūsuf al-Qaraḍāwī occupies an important place among contemporary Muslim scholars of the sīrah. His writings have significantly influenced modern approaches to prophetic biography by emphasizing its enduring relevance for Islamic education, daʿwah, jurisprudence, and social reform. Rather than presenting the Prophet’s ﷺ life solely as a subject of historical inquiry, he viewed the sīrah as a comprehensive guide for cultivating faith, character, leadership, and civilization. His methodological contributions continue to be widely studied in seminaries, universities, and institutes devoted to the study of the Prophet’s ﷺ life.
