Sariyyat Jamūm

The Sariyyah of Jamūm was a military expedition dispatched by the Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ during the Madinan period toward the area of Jamūm, a location situated near Makkah along important caravan routes. The expedition formed part of the Prophet’s ﷺ broader efforts to monitor Quraysh movements and maintain pressure on hostile tribal groups opposing the Muslim community.

According to the classical sīrah and maghāzī sources, the Muslim detachment was sent to investigate reports concerning enemy activity in the region and to secure the surrounding routes. Some reports connect the expedition with encounters involving tribes allied with Quraysh, though no major battle is prominently recorded. Like many smaller sarāyā, the mission primarily served reconnaissance and deterrent purposes.

The Sariyyah of Jamūm reflects the strategic use of mobile expeditions in the Prophet’s ﷺ military policy during the Madinan years. Such operations helped protect Muslim interests, gather intelligence, and demonstrate the growing authority of the Islamic state across the Arabian Peninsula.
