Sariyyat ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rawāḥah
The Sariyyah of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rawāḥah (RA) was among the expeditions dispatched by the Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ during the Medinan period to monitor hostile movements and maintain the security of the Muslim community. ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rawāḥah, a prominent Anṣārī Companion from the Khazraj tribe, was known for his loyalty, eloquence, and devotion to Islam. He participated in several important campaigns alongside the Prophet ﷺ and was entrusted with delicate military and diplomatic responsibilities. One of the expeditions associated with him was directed toward the region of Khaybar, where tensions persisted between the Muslims and certain Jewish tribes accused of supporting anti-Muslim alliances against Madīnah.
According to the early sīrah and maghāzī sources, the Prophet ﷺ appointed ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rawāḥah (RA) to assess the conditions in Khaybar and supervise matters related to its agricultural revenues after the Muslim victory there in 7 AH / 628 CE. He became particularly noted for his integrity and justice in evaluating the produce that was to be shared between the Muslims and the inhabitants of Khaybar under treaty arrangements. Reports preserved in classical literature describe how he refused bribery and dealt fairly with the people despite tensions between the parties. His conduct was later cited by Muslim scholars as an example of honesty, accountability, and ethical governance in Islamic administration.
The sariyyah and missions of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rawāḥah (RA) reflect the broader efforts of the Prophet ﷺ to stabilize northern Arabia and establish political order after years of conflict. They also illustrate the reliance placed upon trusted Companions in carrying out military, economic, and judicial responsibilities. Classical historians such as Ibn Isḥāq, al-Wāqidī, and Ibn Saʿd recorded accounts of these expeditions in their discussions of the maghāzī and the administration of Khaybar, preserving an important aspect of the Prophet’s ﷺ statecraft and leadership.
