Ṣafiyyah bint Ḥuyayy (RA)
Ṣafiyyah bint Ḥuyayy (RA) was one of the wives of Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ and is honoured among the Ummahāt al-Muʾminīn (Mothers of the Believers). She was the daughter of Ḥuyayy ibn Akhṭab, a prominent leader of the Jewish tribe of Banū al-Naḍīr in Madinah. Through her lineage, Ṣafiyyah belonged to a noble family of Banū Isrāʾīl, and Islamic sources frequently mention her descent from Prophet Hārūn (RA). Her life occupies an important place in sīrah literature because it reflects the Prophet’s ﷺ relations with the Jewish tribes of Arabia and the incorporation of diverse communities into the emerging Muslim society.
Ṣafiyyah (RA) initially lived among the Jewish tribes of Madinah and later at Khaybar following the expulsion of Banū al-Naḍīr. After the Muslim victory at Khaybar in 7 AH / 628 CE, she was taken into Muslim custody. The Prophet ﷺ subsequently emancipated her and married her, making her freedom her dowry according to many historical reports. The marriage carried social and political significance, easing tensions and strengthening relations between Muslims and segments of the Jewish community.
The sīrah and ḥadīth literature portray Ṣafiyyah (RA) as intelligent, dignified, and devoted to the Prophet ﷺ. Although she occasionally experienced emotional difficulty due to tensions among some members of the household and references to her Jewish ancestry, the Prophet ﷺ consistently defended and honoured her status. In one narration, he instructed her to respond to criticism by affirming her noble lineage through Hārūn (RA), Mūsā (RA), and her marriage to Muḥammad ﷺ. Such reports reflect the Prophet’s emphasis on personal dignity and equality among believers.
Ṣafiyyah (RA) narrated several ḥadīths related to the Prophet ﷺ, worship, and domestic life. She was known for her piety and generosity and remained respected among the Companions after the Prophet’s death. During periods of political unrest in the caliphate of ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān (RA), historical reports indicate that she maintained loyalty to the Muslim leadership and attempted to assist the caliph during the siege of his residence.
In Islamic historical tradition, Ṣafiyyah bint Ḥuyayy (RA) is remembered as a noble wife of the Prophet ﷺ whose life symbolized reconciliation, dignity, and integration within the early Muslim community. Her biography reflects important aspects of the Prophet’s ﷺ character, including mercy, justice, and honourable treatment of women from different social and religious backgrounds.
