Muḥammad Shafīʿ
Muḥammad Shafīʿ ibn Muḥammad Yāsīn (1314–1396/1897–1976), widely known as Muftī Muḥammad Shafīʿ, was one of the foremost Islamic scholars of the Indian subcontinent in the twentieth century. A leading representative of the Deoband tradition, he studied under eminent scholars, particularly Ashraf ʿAlī Thānawī, and later became the founder of Dār al-ʿUlūm Karachi, one of the most influential centers of Islamic learning in Pakistan. His scholarly contributions encompass Qurʾānic exegesis, ḥadīth, jurisprudence, theology, and Islamic education. Although he is primarily remembered as a jurist and exegete, his writings also made a significant contribution to the understanding and popularization of the Prophet Muḥammad’s life and teachings.
Muḥammad Shafīʿ’s contribution to sīrah scholarship is most clearly reflected in his effort to integrate the Prophet’s biography into Qurʾānic interpretation and religious instruction. His monumental commentary Maʿārif al-Qurʾān contains extensive discussions of events from the Prophet’s life, including the Hijrah, the battles of Badr, Uḥud, al-Khandaq, Ḥudaybiyah, the conquest of Makkah, and the Farewell Pilgrimage. By linking Qurʾānic verses to their historical contexts, he helped readers understand the development of the Prophetic mission and the emergence of the early Muslim community. In addition, his Urdu works and lectures on the life, character, and teachings of the Prophet contributed to the dissemination of sīrah knowledge among a broad audience in South Asia.
His scholarship was firmly grounded in the discipline of ḥadīth. Muḥammad Shafīʿ viewed the sunnah as the indispensable explanation of the Qurʾān and consistently relied upon authenticated Prophetic traditions in his writings. His discussions of sīrah were therefore closely connected to ḥadīth, drawing upon reports preserved in the major collections and classical sīrah sources. He emphasized the Prophet’s role as the practical embodiment of the Qurʾān and frequently used ḥadīth evidence to explain the moral, spiritual, legal, and social dimensions of the Prophetic example. This approach enabled him to present the Prophet’s life not merely as history but as a continuing source of guidance for Muslims.
Muḥammad Shafīʿ’s importance for sīrah studies lies in his ability to synthesize Qurʾānic exegesis, ḥadīth, and Prophetic biography into a coherent educational framework. Rather than producing a single comprehensive sīrah work, he incorporated the study of the Prophet’s life throughout his exegetical and religious writings, demonstrating the inseparable relationship between the Qurʾān and the sunnah. Through Maʿārif al-Qurʾān, his lectures, and his educational activities, he helped cultivate a deeper appreciation of the Prophet Muḥammad’s life among modern Muslim readers. His works remain widely consulted by students and scholars interested in the intersection of Qurʾānic studies, ḥadīth, and sīrah.
