Karam Shāh al-Azharī

Pīr Muḥammad Karam Shāh al-Azharī (1918–1998) was one of Pakistan’s most distinguished Islamic scholars, jurists, Qurʾān exegetes, and sīrah authors of the twentieth century. Born in Bhērā, Punjab, he received his early religious education in the traditional madrasah system before pursuing advanced studies at al-Azhar University in Cairo, from which he acquired the honorific al-Azharī. Throughout his scholarly career, he combined traditional Sunni learning with a concern for addressing the intellectual and spiritual needs of contemporary Muslims. His contributions to Qurʾānic exegesis, ḥadīth, jurisprudence, and prophetic biography earned him widespread recognition across the Muslim world.

Pīr Karam Shāh’s enduring contribution to sīrah scholarship is his monumental work Ḍiyāʾ al-Nabī, one of the most comprehensive and influential biographies of the Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ in the Urdu language. Written over several decades, the multi-volume work synthesizes classical sīrah, maghāzī, ḥadīth, and historical sources while engaging with modern academic discussions. It presents a detailed account of the Prophet’s ﷺ lineage, early life, mission, military campaigns, diplomatic activities, family life, and enduring legacy. Distinguished by its extensive documentation and balanced methodology, Ḍiyāʾ al-Nabī has become a standard reference in Urdu sīrah literature.

In addition to Ḍiyāʾ al-Nabī, Pīr Karam Shāh authored the celebrated Qurʾānic commentary Ḍiyāʾ al-Qurʾān, in which he frequently explained Qurʾānic verses through events from the Prophet’s ﷺ life. His approach integrated tafsīr, ḥadīth, and sīrah, emphasizing the inseparable relationship between revelation and prophetic practice. Throughout his writings, he defended the authenticity of the classical sīrah tradition while presenting the Prophet’s ﷺ life as a comprehensive model of faith, morality, governance, and spirituality. His scholarship appealed to both specialists and general readers through its combination of academic rigor and accessible style.

Pīr Karam Shāh occupies a prominent place among modern Muslim scholars of the Prophet’s ﷺ life. His works have significantly shaped contemporary Urdu sīrah studies and continue to be widely taught in seminaries and universities throughout South Asia. By combining fidelity to the classical sources with engagement in modern scholarship, he helped ensure the continued vitality of sīrah literature in the modern period. His Ḍiyāʾ al-Nabī remains one of the most authoritative and widely consulted modern biographies of the Prophet ﷺ in the Urdu language.
