Ghālib ibn ʿAbd Allāh (RA)

Ghālib ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Laythī (RA) was a distinguished Companion of the Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ and one of the commanders entrusted with several military expeditions (sarāyā) during the Madinan period. He belonged to the Banū Layth tribe and was known for his courage, leadership, and loyalty to the Islamic mission. The Prophet ﷺ appointed him to lead a number of reconnaissance and military operations aimed at securing the Muslim community, countering hostile tribal threats, and maintaining stability in the regions surrounding Madīnah.

Among the most notable expeditions led by Ghālib ibn ʿAbd Allāh was the Sariyyah against Banū al-Mulawwaḥ, a branch of the Banū Murrah tribe in the area of al-Kadīd. He also commanded expeditions against tribes that were suspected of preparing attacks on the Muslims. These missions generally involved gathering intelligence, deterring aggression, and demonstrating the growing authority of the Islamic state. His leadership reflected the Prophet’s confidence in his military judgment and reliability.

The historical sources mention Ghālib ibn ʿAbd Allāh primarily in connection with these expeditions rather than through extensive biographical details. Nevertheless, his repeated appointment as a commander highlights his importance among the Companions who contributed to the defence and consolidation of the early Muslim community. His role illustrates the efforts undertaken by the Prophet ﷺ to establish security in Arabia through capable and trusted leaders.
