Bayʿat al-ʿAqabah al-Thāniyah
Bayʿat al-ʿAqabah al-Thāniyah refers to the second and more comprehensive pledge given to the Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ by a group of individuals from Yathrib (later Madīnah), representing a decisive stage in the development of the early Muslim community. The event took place during the pilgrimage season around 13 BH/622 CE at al-ʿAqabah near Minā, in the outskirts of Makkah. It followed the earlier pledge of the previous year and marked a significant expansion in both the number of participants and the scope of commitments undertaken.
The delegation from Yathrib consisted of more than seventy men and a small number of women, primarily from the tribes of Aws and Khazraj, who had increasingly accepted Islam through the efforts of Muṣʿab ibn ʿUmayr. They met the Prophet ﷺ secretly at night and entered into a formal agreement that extended beyond personal ethical commitments to include collective responsibility for the protection and support of the Prophet ﷺ.
The terms of the Second Pledge, as recorded in sīrah and ḥadīth sources, included commitments to obedience in both ease and hardship, to spending in charity in all circumstances, to promoting what is right and discouraging what is wrong, and to speaking truthfully without fear of criticism. Most significantly, the participants pledged to defend the Prophet ﷺ as they would defend their own families and property if he were to migrate to Yathrib. This element introduced a clear political and defensive dimension to the agreement, distinguishing it from the First Pledge.
Following the pledge, the Prophet ﷺ appointed twelve representatives from among the participants to act as leaders within their respective groups. This step reflects the emergence of an organized structure of leadership and communal responsibility in preparation for the establishment of a new socio-political order in Yathrib.
Bayʿat al-ʿAqabah al-Thāniyah holds central importance in Sīrah historiography as it effectively paved the way for the migration (hijrah) of the Prophet ﷺ and his followers from Makkah to Yathrib. The guarantees of protection and support provided by the people of Yathrib made possible the relocation of the Muslim community and the subsequent formation of the first Islamic polity.
From an analytical perspective, this pledge represents a transition from preaching to organized community formation and governance. It demonstrates the shift from a primarily religious movement in Makkah to a structured society in Madīnah, characterized by defined obligations of mutual protection, leadership, and social organization.
In conclusion, Bayʿat al-ʿAqabah al-Thāniyah marks a decisive moment in early Islamic history, characterized by the formalization of political allegiance and collective responsibility toward the Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ. It stands as a foundational event leading directly to the Hijrah and the establishment of the Muslim community in Madīnah, and remains a key subject of study in sīrah literature for understanding the transformation of Islam from a message into a functioning society.
