Ḥāṭib ibn Abī Baltaʿa al-Laḫmī (d. c. 30 AH/650 CE) was a companion of the Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ, an early convert to Islam, and one of the participants in the Battle of Badr. Although not a member of the Quraysh by lineage, he became closely associated with the Muslim community in Makkah and later joined the Hijrah to Madīnah. In the sīrah tradition, he is remembered above all for the incident preceding the Conquest of Makkah, when he attempted to send a confidential letter to the Quraysh, and for the Prophet’s ﷺ merciful treatment of him after his motives were revealed.

Ḥāṭib embraced Islam during its early years and migrated to Madīnah with the other believers. He participated in Badr and other major events of the Prophet’s ﷺ career, earning the distinction accorded to the veterans of Islam’s first decisive victory. The sources also record that the Prophet ﷺ entrusted him with diplomatic responsibilities. Most notably, he was sent as an envoy to al-Muqawqis, the ruler of Egypt, inviting him to Islam. Although al-Muqawqis did not accept the invitation, he treated the envoy honorably and sent gifts to the Prophet ﷺ, including Māriya al-Qibṭiyya.

The episode for which Ḥāṭib is best known occurred shortly before the Conquest of Makkah in 8 AH/630 CE. Concerned for the safety of his family members who remained in Makkah without the protection of a powerful clan, he secretly sent a letter informing the Quraysh of the Prophet’s ﷺ planned advance. Through divine revelation, the Prophet ﷺ learned of the message and dispatched ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib and others to intercept it before it reached its destination. When questioned, Ḥāṭib acknowledged his action but explained that he had acted not out of disbelief or sympathy for the Quraysh, but solely from a desire to secure protection for his vulnerable relatives. Accepting his explanation, the Prophet ﷺ forgave him, reminding those present that Ḥāṭib had fought at Badr and that Allah had shown special favor to the participants of that battle.

Ḥāṭib lived through the remainder of the Prophet’s ﷺ lifetime and into the period of the early caliphate. In the sīrah tradition, he is remembered as a devoted Companion whose momentary lapse was outweighed by a lifetime of service to Islam. His story illustrates both the human concerns faced by the early Muslims and the Prophet’s ﷺ capacity for understanding and mercy. As a veteran of Badr, a trusted envoy, and a participant in many of the formative events of the Islamic community, Ḥāṭib ibn Abī Baltaʿa occupies a respected place among the notable Companions of the Prophet ﷺ.
