Shams al-Dīn Muḥammad ibn Yūsuf al-Ṣāliḥī al-Shāmī (d. 942 AH/1536 CE) was a distinguished Syrian scholar, historian, traditionist, and one of the foremost authorities on the life of the Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ during the late Mamlūk and early Ottoman periods. Born in Damascus, he received a comprehensive education in ḥadīth, jurisprudence, tafsīr, and Arabic literature under leading scholars of his age. Although he authored works in several branches of the Islamic sciences, his enduring reputation rests upon his monumental contributions to sīrah scholarship. His method combined extensive citation of earlier authorities with careful organization of historical material, making his writings among the most comprehensive compilations in the classical sīrah tradition.

al-Ṣāliḥī al-Shāmī's importance for sīrah studies lies in his systematic synthesis of the vast corpus of earlier biographical, historical, and ḥadīth literature. Drawing upon Ibn Isḥāq, Ibn Hishām, al-Wāqidī, Ibn Saʿd, al-Ṭabarī, al-Bayhaqī, Ibn Kathīr, al-Maqrīzī, and numerous other authorities, he assembled one of the most extensive encyclopedic treatments of the Prophet’s ﷺ life. His work preserves variant narrations, documents scholarly opinions, and records material from many earlier sources that are now lost or survive only in fragmentary form. Consequently, it occupies a central place in the later development of sīrah literature.

His greatest achievement is Subul al-Hudā wa al-Rashād fī Sīrat Khayr al-ʿIbād, a multi-volume encyclopedia of the Prophet’s ﷺ life that integrates sīrah, maghāzī, dalāʾil al-nubuwwah, shamāʾil, khaṣāʾiṣ al-nabī, and related subjects into a single comprehensive work. Organized thematically as well as chronologically, it examines the Prophet’s ﷺ genealogy, birth, mission, military expeditions, miracles, family life, correspondence, legal practice, and character while incorporating extensive citations from earlier authorities. Because of its breadth and meticulous documentation, Subul al-Hudā wa al-Rashād remains one of the richest repositories of classical sīrah literature and continues to serve as a major reference for researchers.

al-Ṣāliḥī al-Shāmī occupies a distinguished position among the great compilers of prophetic biography. Although writing centuries after the Prophet ﷺ, his scholarship preserved an enormous body of earlier historical material that might otherwise have been inaccessible. His encyclopedic methodology, extensive documentation, and careful organization have made his work indispensable for the study of the Prophet’s ﷺ life and the historiography of sīrah. Modern scholars continue to consult Subul al-Hudā wa al-Rashād as one of the most comprehensive classical sources on the Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ.
