al-Qāḍī ʿIyāḍ

ʿIyāḍ ibn Mūsā al-Yaḥṣubī, widely known as al-Qāḍī ʿIyāḍ (476–544 AH/1083–1149 CE), was one of the most distinguished Mālikī jurists, ḥadīth scholars, and sīrah authorities of the western Islamic world. Born in Ceuta (Sabtah) in North Africa during the Almoravid period, he became renowned for his mastery of Islamic jurisprudence, ḥadīth, theology, and Prophetic biography. His scholarship exercised enduring influence across the Maghrib and al-Andalus, and his works continue to occupy a central place in Islamic intellectual and devotional traditions.

al-Qāḍī ʿIyāḍ received his early education in Ceuta before traveling extensively in pursuit of knowledge. He studied under leading scholars of North Africa and al-Andalus and gained distinction within the Mālikī legal tradition. Because of his scholarly reputation and legal expertise, he was appointed judge (qāḍī) in Ceuta and later in Granada. Historical sources describe him as a scholar of strong moral character, intellectual rigor, and deep devotion to the sunnah of Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ.

Among his many scholarly contributions, al-Qāḍī ʿIyāḍ achieved lasting fame through his celebrated work al-Shifāʾ bi-Taʿrīf Ḥuqūq al-Muṣṭafā. This influential text occupies a unique place in sīrah and devotional literature because of its comprehensive treatment of the rights, virtues, miracles, and noble character of Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ. The work combines Qurʾānic verses, aḥādīth, historical reports, and theological discussions to demonstrate the exalted status of the Prophet. For centuries, al-Shifāʾ has remained one of the most widely studied and revered books concerning love and reverence for the Prophet ﷺ in the Muslim world.

In the field of sīrah, al-Qāḍī ʿIyāḍ emphasized not only the historical dimensions of the Prophet’s life but also the spiritual, ethical, and theological significance of Prophethood. His writings encouraged Muslims to cultivate reverence, obedience, and love for Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ while safeguarding the dignity and sanctity of the Prophetic tradition. This devotional approach contributed greatly to the development of later sīrah and shamāʾil literature.

The legacy of al-Qāḍī ʿIyāḍ remains deeply influential in Islamic scholarship and spirituality. His works continue to be taught in traditional seminaries and universities throughout the Muslim world. Through his contributions to sīrah, ḥadīth, and Mālikī jurisprudence, al-Qāḍī ʿIyāḍ secured a lasting place among the foremost scholars devoted to preserving and articulating the life and virtues of Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ.
