al-Maqrīzī
Taqī al-Dīn Aḥmad ibn ʿAlī al-Maqrīzī (766–845 AH/1364–1442 CE) was one of the foremost historians of the Mamlūk period and an eminent authority on Islamic history, biography, and historical geography. Born in Cairo, he received a thorough education in ḥadīth, jurisprudence, history, and Arabic literature under leading scholars of his time. Although best known for his monumental works on the history and topography of Egypt, al-Maqrīzī also made significant contributions to the preservation and study of the life of the Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ. His scholarship is distinguished by meticulous documentation, extensive use of earlier sources, and careful attention to chronology and historical detail.
al-Maqrīzī's importance for sīrah studies derives principally from his systematic compilation and preservation of earlier historical traditions concerning the Prophet ﷺ and the formative period of Islam. Drawing upon authorities such as Ibn Isḥāq, Ibn Hishām, al-Wāqidī, Ibn Saʿd, al-Ṭabarī, and numerous later historians, he transmitted a wide range of reports relating to the Prophet’s ﷺ genealogy, mission, military campaigns, diplomatic activities, and final years. His writings frequently preserve variant traditions and documentary details that enrich the study of classical sīrah literature and Islamic historiography.
Among his most important contributions is Imtāʿ al-Asmāʿ bimā li al-Nabī min al-Aḥwāl wa al-Amwāl wa al-Ḥafadah wa al-Matāʿ, one of the most comprehensive medieval works devoted to the Prophet’s ﷺ life. The work synthesizes the earlier sīrah, maghāzī, ḥadīth, and historical traditions into a detailed narrative while incorporating discussions of the Prophet’s ﷺ family, possessions, correspondence, military expeditions, and administrative practices. Al-Maqrīzī also authored Al-Khabar ʿan al-Bashar, a universal history that includes substantial material on the Prophet ﷺ and the rise of Islam. His writings became important sources for later historians and remain valuable references for modern scholarship.
al-Maqrīzī occupies a distinguished place in the historiography of the sīrah. Although writing several centuries after the Prophet ﷺ, he demonstrated exceptional diligence in collecting, organizing, and critically transmitting earlier historical materials. His works preserve numerous traditions that might otherwise have been lost and provide valuable insight into the medieval understanding of the Prophet’s ﷺ life. Consequently, they continue to be consulted by scholars investigating the development of sīrah literature, Mamlūk historiography, and the transmission of early Islamic historical traditions.
