Abū al-Aʿlā Mawdūdī
Sayyid Abū al-Aʿlā Mawdūdī was one of the most influential Muslim intellectuals and revivalist thinkers of the twentieth century. Born in Aurangabad in 1903, he emerged as a prominent scholar, journalist, mufassir, and founder of the Jamāʿat-i Islāmī movement in the Indian subcontinent. Although not primarily a classical sīrah historian, Mawdūdī made substantial contributions to modern understanding of the life, mission, and socio-political significance of the Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ through his writings on Islam, Qurʾānic exegesis, Islamic governance, and reform. His intellectual project sought to revive Islam as a comprehensive system governing individual, social, political, and spiritual life.
Mawdūdī approached the sīrah through the lens of the Qurʾān and sunnah as a dynamic program of moral and civilizational transformation rather than merely a chronological biography. His writings portrayed the Prophet ﷺ as the ideal reformer, statesman, educator, commander, and leader whose mission established a complete Islamic order in society. In this regard, he emphasized the continuity between the Prophetic mission in Madīnah and the broader objectives of Islamic revival in the modern world. His interpretations strongly influenced contemporary Islamic movements and modern sīrah discourse across South Asia and beyond.
Among his most important sīrah-related works is Sīrat-i Sarwar-i ʿĀlam, which presents the life of the Prophet ﷺ in an intellectual, reformist, and movement-oriented framework. His celebrated Qurʾānic commentary Tafhīm al-Qurʾān is also highly significant for sīrah studies because it extensively discusses occasions of revelation (asbāb al-nuzūl), the Makkan and Madinan periods, Prophetic methodology of daʿwah, relations with various communities, battles, treaties, and the formation of the Islamic state. Through these discussions, Mawdūdī integrated Qurʾānic exegesis with historical and social analysis of the Prophetic era.
Mawdūdī further contributed to understanding the political and societal dimensions of the sīrah through works such as Jihād fī al-Islām, Khilāfat wa Mulūkiyyat, Islāmī Riyāsat, and Tārīkh-i Daʿwat wa ʿAzīmat. These writings explored Islamic governance, jihād, leadership, and the historical legacy of the Prophetic model in shaping Muslim civilization. His works consistently emphasized that the Prophet ﷺ established not only a spiritual community but also a just moral and political order guided by divine revelation.
Through the lens of modern Islamic scholarship, Mawdūdī occupies an important place among twentieth-century Muslim thinkers who revived interest in the practical and civilizational dimensions of the sīrah. His writings continue to influence contemporary discussions on Islamic reform, daʿwah, governance, and the relevance of the Prophetic model in modern society.
