Finally, in 1824, the British Admiralty agreed that the continent should be officially called Australia. It is an independent sovereign welfare state of more than 26 million people. It is a land of opportunity and abounds with economic prosperity, sound affordable education options, world renowned health and retirement schemes, clean air and fresh water supplies, an abundance of land, all providing for a safe and secure environment. Australia is also a dynamic and democratic country. There is no racial or religious discrimination. It is the world’s twelfth largest economy and a top performing nation on almost every measure of excellence, from health to wealth, from ease of doing business to educational attainment. International students are attracted to Australia by its high standard of teaching, its internationally accepted qualifications, and its welcoming and diverse society. Australia has more than one thousand universities, training colleges, English language institutes and schools, offering international students some 25,000 courses. The quality of Australia’s vocational education and training sector is recognized around the world. Six Australian universities are named among the world’s top 100 higher education institutions in the World University Rankings. Australia’s two largest cities, Melbourne and Sydney, are ranked among the top 10 best student cities in the world according to the QS World University Rankings.
